269: Wayne Baker, PhD, Explains the Art of Asking to Advance your Business and Personal Goals

Today on My Quest for the BestWayne Baker and I discuss the art of asking and overcoming the most common obstacles for small business leaders.

Wayne is the author of All You Have to Do Is Ask: How to Master the Most Important Skill for Success. He is the Robert P. Thome Professor of Business and a faculty director at the Center for Positive Organizations at the University of Michigan. A large part of his thought leadership is based on working with organizational leaders focuses on finding and cultivating positive deviance (as in desirable differences from the norm – I just know I’m going to be misquoted here by some listeners and/or readers who will call me out on social media somewhere for unfairly calling people “deviants”).

It is my hope that you listen to the insights he shares about assisting people to get past any reluctance to ask for help at work or in their personal lives. In one example, he describes how in a reciprocity ring exercise where a woman asked for assistance in locating a doctor to help her infant niece who needed surgery to correct a rare birth disorder and someone in the group knew a specialist directly and gladly made the connection. From that example, the lesson I learned was to never assume what or who those you know know.

Both Wayne’s experience and my own are aligned in finding how eager people are to share their expertise and assistance, yet how few of us ask others as often or as early as would be beneficial. For a shot of inspiration to exercise your ask muscle group, listen to Wayne’s interview!

Put it to the test for yourself: Learning to ask well (using both the structure and language examples) is the key to closing the gap between your desires and achievements.

3 Value Bombs from this episode:

  • Research shows that when we can ask for help, we are less frustrated at work or at home.
  • Sometimes we don’t ask because we think no one is willing or able to help. Research shows just the opposite: that people are willing and able to help if you ask them.
  • Getting the support you need to achieve your goals at work and beyond, is too often inhibited by difficulties you face (or just believe you face) in asking for it.
