Expert Bio

Douglas Mulhall’s lifelong quest is to eliminate the most widespread fatal condition on Earth; heart disease. Spurred by the death of his father from heart disease in the 1980s, he embarked on a journey from environment and media to biotech and healthcare, which he says was “way beyond my comfort zone". It led him to co-found Elastrin Therapeutics in 2018 with scientists who aim to reverse hardening of the arteries by targeting the elastic fiber that drives every movement in the body. His upcoming book Stopping the Inflammation Storm chronicles discoveries about the cycle that triggers cardiovascular disease and but also kills patients when they get COVID-19. His philosophy is ‘taking on big challenges in ways that others haven't dreamed of’. The tips he offers for business owners include; ‘look in places no one else has looked’ and ‘find where people come from before trying to tell them where to go’. A big challenge in his work is keeping scientists focused ‘due to their inherent curiosity about everything’.

Douglas is Chairman of medical biotech company Elastrin Therapeutics www.elastrin.com. He is formerly; first managing director of EPEA, an environmental R&D institute based in Germany www.epea.com, co-founder of The Environmental Institute in Brazil, co-founder and CEO of ICTV a European national TV & radio network, and developer of non-profit housing in Vancouver Canada. In his 40-year career as an environmental health entrepreneur he trained company & government leaders how to create healthy environments and products, also working with startup consultancies like Positive Impakt www.positiveimpakt.eu in Luxembourg. He is a Research Fellow at Technical University of Munich and Guest Researcher at the Technical University of Delft in The Netherlands. His articles and films cover the link between technology, environment and health. His books include Our Molecular Future, How Nanotechnology, Robotics, Genetics and Artificial Intelligence Will Transform Our World (Prometheus 2002 still in print), The Calcium Bomb (2004) and educational booklets like Creating Buildings with Positive Impacts (2019) and Guide to Wastewater Recycling in Tropic Regions (1997). He produced and directed award-winning documentary films. He has given hundreds of media interviews and was featured in shows like the History Channel’s Modern Marvels. He is currently based in Halifax, Canada having recently returned to his native country after many years living in Europe.
